Social Responsibility

01/01.1970

"Bear weight on our shoulders, and forge ahead, rain or shine." The historical background when China Classification Society (CCS) was born determines the historical mission it shoulders. CCS always has profound understanding to the fundamental requirements of China for developing the shipping and shipbuilding industries, safeguarding national maritime rights and interests, and ensuring national water transport safety. Therefore, we adhere to the policy of independence and self-reliance, make all-out effort to provide advanced, safe, green and applicable standards for the industry, and apply new technology and new standards to promote the upgrading, transformation and enhancement of competitiveness of our shipping, shipbuilding and supporting industries. Meanwhile, the leapfrog development of China's shipping, shipbuilding and related industries excites us to harden our will and hone our skills, and we will forge ahead hand in hand and shoulder by shoulder with industry partners to create a more brilliant future. The global publication of the first edition of CCS's Specifications for Green Ships and Specifications for Intelligent Ships has strongly promoted the emission reduction campaign and the development of intelligent technology in shipping industry, and further solidified the foundation for us to fulfill our sacred mission. In May 2016, CCS’s Structural Specifications for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers passed IMO review, which will further enhance our ability to serve the industry and accelerate the implementation and continuous improvement of China national standards (GBs). In the new century, maritime security and ocean environment have attracted increasing concern of the international community. As a responsible classification society, we adhere to the CCS Mission of "Safety, Environmental protection and Creating value for clients and society.", continuously build our technical capacity, and accumulate strength to provide technical support for shipping safety, energy saving and emission reduction. With the improvement of our service and our service system, the scale of CCS classed fleet is booming, as a significant number of super-large, high-tech and high value-added ships have joined the fleet and thus enhanced its overall internationalization and modernization. The scale of CCS classed fleet has exceeded 100 million gross tons and will soon be among the "club" of 100 million tons classification societies. The sharpness of the sword relies on constant honing. It is only after more than 60 years of heroic development that CCS has become a key player in the international maritime arena. So far, CCS has been elected as IACS chairman for three terms, gracefully demonstrating to and convincing the international maritime community of the wisdom and style of the great eastern country. Standing on the new historical starting point, CCS is on course to write even more glorious chapters of the new era with the fighting spirit of here and now and the heroic passion to forge ahead!

International Classification

01/01.1970

Classification is an important method for assessment of ship’s technical conditions, by means of whether the ship is classed and what grade the class is, directly influencing the ship’s freight and insurance (i.e. the trust level the cargo owner and insurance company have in the ship), and also affecting the ship’s purchase price or rent at the time of dealing or chartering. Comparing with non-classed ships, a classed ship has considerable advantages in ship transactions, shipping cargo collections and insurance rates. After years of development, CCS succeeds in keeping pace with the international counterparts in ship survey business, obtaining recognition and authorization from the administrations of more and more countries or regions to carry out statutory surveys and issue corresponding certificates on their behalf. The classification surveys provided by CCS and the assigned class symbols and notations have been recognized by the insurers both at home and abroad and the ships classed with CCS can enjoy the same preferential insurance treatment for the cargo carried.CCS owns a team of well-experienced exclusive surveyors with high educational level. CCS has set up branches/offices at major ports along China’s coast and the Yangtze River and in countries/regions in Asia, Europe, America, Africa, Oceania etc., shaping up a global service network.CCS carries out classification surveys and issues corresponding certificates strictly according to the quality system requirements to ensure that the entire service process is performed under controlled conditions and the survey quality is guaranteed. CCS has become one of the best member societies of IACS in terms of good PSC quality record of CCS-classed ships. With the rapid development of the shipping and shipbuilding industry, the CCS classification fleet has expanded. A number of very large, high-tech, and high-value-added ships (LNG, VLCC, VLOC, 21,000-TEU very large container ships, 210,000-dwt bulk carriers, 400,000-dwt ore carriers, etc.) have joined the CCS fleet, making it more international and modern. By the end of 2019, in terms of international voyage fleet, 4,200 ships were classed with a gross tonnage of 1.12 and an average age of 9.5 years.CCS accelerates the technology research on high value-added ships, and completes the direct calculation and standard formulation of large-scale thin-film LNG carriers, the research and development of ship types such as LNG dual-fuel bulk ore ships, LNG bunkering ships, LNG-powered large tankers, and oil-electric hybrid bulk ore ships, and on-board verification of the applicability of the rules for large luxury cruise ships. CCS makes greater efforts to develop service products and provide customers with precise services. Also, CCS carries out structural optimization and energy efficiency upgrades for large ore carriers, bulk carriers, and product oil tankers, and provides ship emergency response services and ship condition assessment procedures (CAP). CCS has promulgated the “Guidelines for Ship Remote Surveys”, to promote remote survey technology, provide customers with efficient and flexible survey services, and effectively respond to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the classification business.   (20,000-TEU very large container ships “COSCO SHIPPING SCORPIO”)   (308,000-dwt oil tanker “XIN HAI YUAN”)   (62,000-dwt multi-purpose pulp carrier “COSCO SHIPPING EXCELLENCE”)   CCS is committed to providing excellent services to all circles in the field of ship classification. Green and Environmental Protection

11/13.2020

Green eco-ships to become the mainstream trend of future developmentUnder global ecological, resource and environmental pressures, the international community has tasked the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with introducing a number of measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, alien biological transfer, air pollution prevention, and marine plastic waste management. Green and ecological development has become an inevitable trend in the subsequent development of shipping and shipbuilding. It will be one of the focuses of future international policy and technical standards, and an important direction for future research and development and the application of new technologies.“Green eco-ships”, taking safety as a prerequisite and environmental protection as a main target,  putting ship energy efficiency at its core, recycling and crew working environments as auxiliary functions to further reduce the ecological impact on the ship’s operating environment, will inform ship safety, energy conservation, environmental protection, comfort and sustainable development levels, and will form the mainstream trends of future vessel development. In addition to retaining the original green elements, the latest “Rules for Green Eco-ships” released by the China Classification Society (CCS) adds new “ecological” elements, incorporates the concept of circular and sustainable development, and uses low-carbon/zero-carbon green innovative technologies as the important support. These Rules will lead the healthy development of shipping toward a green, ecological and sustainable direction, and help CCS fulfill its social responsibility to serve shipping and promote energy conservation and emission reduction.Providing solutions for the LNG water application industry chainPreventing air pollution from ships drives the shipping industry to adopt advanced technologies to reduce emissions from ships. The new emission reduction technology using LNG fuel is being applied more broadly. CCS promotes and guides the healthy development of LNG applications on water, and works closely with government authorities, energy companies, and universities and colleges to do research covering the entire industrial chain of LNG from transportation, bunkering to utilization. CCS has provided classification services for LNG powered ships, LNG bunkering pontoons, LNG mobile bunkering ships, and LNG transport ships newly built in China. With continuous technology accumulation and attention paid to customer needs, CCS provides customers with an integrated solution to each link in LNG application.Promoting the application of pure battery power on shipsCCS began to study the rules and standards for the use of lithium-ion batteries on ships around 2010, and provided technical support for many new energy ships, including solar photovoltaic + lithium iron phosphate battery catamaran sightseeing ship on Yundang Lake of Xiamen, conversion project of a large car ro-ro ship, “COSCO TENGFEI” (adding solar photovoltaic system and lithium iron phosphate battery), 98-seat dual-power pure electric sightseeing ship on Suzhou River etc. Based on the research results, CCS formulated and issued the relevant standard “Guidelines for the Survey of Solar Photovoltaic Battery System and Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery System”. In order to provide better technical services for battery-powered ships, we have also been committed to the research work of relevant technical standards for pure battery-powered ships since 2018 and have issued “Guidelines for the Survey of Pure Battery-powered Ships”. At the same time, the relevant statutory requirements for lithium iron phosphate batteries have been included in the “Technical Rules for the Statutory Survey of Small Inland Ships” (2019 Amendment) and the “Technical Rules for Statutory Survey of Inland Ships” (2019). At present, a complete standard system has been formed for electric ships powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries from the level of regulations, rules and survey guidelines, which can provide a basis for the design, plan approval and survey of the industry. Other batteries represented by ternary lithium batteries can also be used to provide services to the industry in accordance with the Guidelines for the Survey of Pure Battery-powered Ships of CCS. (Battery-powered ship, 2000-ton coal carrier)  (“East Lake” pure battery-powered ship)  (Battery-powered ship, sea cruiser) (Battery-powered ship, 300-seat ferry)
