CCS is committed to protecting the safety of life and properties at sea and preventing marine environmental pollution, and focuses on the scientific research on water safety and environmental protection application technologies. CCS also provides international-leading technical rules and standards for ships, offshore installations and related industrial products, and offers corresponding classification survey, verification surveys and notarial surveys as an independent third party. As of the end of 2023, CCS has surveyed over 35,000 ships of 196 million GT.

With the authorization of the Administrations of flag States or Regions, CCS carries out statutory survey and other services as authorized by the Administrations according to international conventions, rules, and relevant regulations of authorizing States or Regions. By the end of 2023, CCS had been authorized by the Administrations of 61 major flag States or Regions across the globe, including China, to perform statutory surveys for the ships and offshore installations flying their flags.

With the objective of “Building a first-rate international classification society with global competitiveness”, the service principles of “Safety, environmental protection and creating value for clients and society”, as well as the vision of “Building a unique, first-rate international classification society upon technology and credibility”, and relying on a global service network and the best professional team, CCS provides services for a range of industries and fields including shipping, shipbuilding, shipping finance and insurance, marine equipment, ocean resources exploitation, scientific research, certification and approval, energy saving and emission reduction, etc. by ensuring continuous improvement of brand reputation and value through advanced technology and excellent services.

The development course

2021-12-28: Sun Feng was appointed President of CCS and Cai Yanxian Vice President. The appointments followed the retirement of former President Mo Jianhui and former Vice President Zhu Kai.

2021-12-07: China‘s first floating offshore wind power platform, SAN XIA YIN LING, surveyed by CCS, was successfully connected to the grid for power generation.

2021-09-11: CCS successfully completed the sea trial of the world‘s first LNG dual-fuel very large crude carrier (VLCC) YUAN RUI YANG in a conventional fuel mode,and the ship is classed by CCS.

2021-07-22: The world's first airborne SCR low-speed dieselengine CX52, independently developed by China, was officially launched. CCS took part in its development and surveyed it.

2021-06-25: The world‘s first 100,000 DWT deep-water (1,500m) semi-submersible production and storage platform SHEN HAI 1, surveyed by CCS, was successfully placed into operation.

2021-04-28: The Ship and Offshore Engineering Industry Data Sharing Summit and China Ship/Shipping Block Chain (CSBC) Alliance Founding Conference, sponsored by CCS, were successfully held in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.

2020-11-24: The first Chinese ocean-going fishing vessel, ZHONG TAI 6, classified by CCS, was successfully delivered.

2020-11-12: The 320,000 DWT ultra-large oil tanker (VLCC) YUANGUIYANG, classified by CCS, was delivered. It brought the number of VLCC ships classified by CCS to 95 (15.23 million GT). The CCS fleet is ranked fourth in the world with a global market share of 11 per cent.

2020-05-28: CCS issued the Development Outline of China Classification Society (2021-2050), a three stage strategy towards a "government-trusted, industry-satisfied and international advanced" survey institution.

2020-05-19: CCS held the 5G+intelligent ship survey video conference, and jointly built the "new survey technology and equipment laboratory" base (Zhejiang) with China Mobile. The research team applied 5G, ad-hoc Network communication, image recognition, AR/VR, UAVs and other technological innovations to ship inspections.

2020-02-10: CCS’ "unmanned ship system and key equipment technology laboratory" was approved as a key player in transportation research. Verifying and assessing intelligent ship technology it successfully undertook the "China Unmanned Boat Challenge" which was highly praised by the industry.

2020-01-29: CCS held a conference on fighting COVID-19 and global PPE supplies. It went on to buy 35,668 items of protective clothing, 11,488 surgical masks, 2,112 pairs of goggles and 62 protective masks for the General Hospital of the Yangtze River Shipping. As the situation in China stabilized it worked to support the international fight against the virus, buying and deploying 14,300 masks, 105 items of protective clothing and 76 pairs of goggles to overseas institutions.

2019-11-28: The launching ceremony and the establishment of the working group of the “ship and marine industry application experimental base of the blockchain technology and data security of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of P.R.C. was held in CCS Mansion. CCS is the leader unit of the team.

2019-07-15: The Ship and Marine Technology-Technical Requirements for LNG Filling Dry Coupler (ISO 21593) was officially published. CCS for the first time took a leading role in the development of international standard, making a breakthrough in this field.

2019-04-18: CCS issued the first document of compliance for EU MRV CO2 emission by ships.

2019-01-28: CCS, for the first time, sent surveyors to the Antarctic to provide emergency inspection services for Xue Long, the Polar Exploration Ship.

2019-01-25: Mo Jianhui was appointed as the President of China Classification Society (CCS) and the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of CCS. Li Changjian was appointed as the Secretary of the Party Committee and the Vice President of CCS. Sun Feng was appointed as the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of CCS.

2019-01-01: CCS Hong Kong Branch, Singapore Branch, Hamburg Branch, Athens Branch, New York Branch, Osaka Branch, Busan Branch and Cape Town Branch were established to replace the Southeast Asia Regional Center, European Center, Northeast Asia Regional Center, America Center to enhance local services and operation efficiency.

2018-12-01: CCS released a three-dimensional ship engineering computing software named Compass 3D.

2018-11-28: CCS SSMIS2018, a ship service management system designed for full-lifecycle management of ships and offshore mobile facilities from plan approval to product survey, construction and operation, was put into trial operation.

2018-11-22: CCS published its first Rules for Construction of Ocean-going Steel Fishing Vessels (2018).

2018-08-01: CCS fully took over the statutory survey and certification to ships, marine products and equipment in the specified regions under the responsibility of Guangdong and Heilongjiang Maritime Safety Administrations.

2018-04-20: CCS officially took over and started performing statutory survey of ocean-going fishing vessels and marine products of fishing vessels.

2018-04-17: CCS issued the first electronic certificate for China-flagged ships.

2017-12-13: CCS issued 2017 new technology for intelligent ships/unmanned ships

2017-11-28: The first intelligent ship in the world surveyed by CCS, the 38,800ton bulk carrier “Great Intelligence” was named and delivered

2017-04-27: CCS issues the AiP Certificate of GTT NO96-L03+ Membrane Tank Cargo Containment System

2017-03-21: CCS was designated as the EU certification body

2017-03-10: China’s first deep-sea rescue ship “Nanhai Rescue 102” was delivered and recruited

2017-01-02: The Ministry of Transport issued the “Advice on the Construction of International First Class China Classification Society”, which proposes that by 2025, CCS will be world-leading in size, technology,service, management and internationalization, and will be the international first class classification society with strong innovation ability, high level service, good scale economy and excellent image and reputation,leading and promoting the improvement of national ship inspection technology

2016-07-01: CCS assumed the chairmanship of IACS

2016-05-13: the 96th IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 96) meeting announced CCS construction rules for bulk carriers and tankers was met MSC’s aim and functional requirements of GBS for bulk carriers and tankers.

2016-05-06: Seatrade Awards 2016 was held in London. CCS was presented “Special Contribution Award”.

2016-04-01: CCS Guidelines for Polar Vessels came into force

2016-03-18: CCS signed a new authorization agreement with Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) to carry out statutory survey of Panamanian ships.

2016-03-01: CCS Rules for Intelligent Ships came into force.

2015-12-16: CCS for the first secured the third-party certification and survey business for overseas single point mooring system and subsea pipelines—the PMB petrochemical project through successful bidding.

2015-12-02: during China-Africa Cooperation Forum Johannesburg Summit, China Classification Society Quality Assurance Ltd. (CCSC) signed strategic cooperation agreement with Africa Carbon Exchange.

2015-12-01: CCS Rules for LNG Bunkering Ship came into force

2015-09-01: CCS granted 40000DWT bulk carrier “Zhen Zhu Hai” of COSCO Bulk Carrier Co., LTD the EOM class notation“Online Comprehensive Monitoring of Ship Energy Efficiency”. It was the first time that CCS issued this type of class notation.

2015-04-15: CCS presented to MAN the first EIAPP certificate compliant with IMO TIER III emission requirements, and the world’s first AIP certificate for medium-speed diesel Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR system).

2015-01-09: the National Awards for Science and Technology Conference 2014 was held in Beijing. The “semi-submersible drilling platform ‘Hai Yang Shi You 981’” research and application project in which CCS is a main completion unit won the special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

2014-12-31: non-Chinese flag ships reached 51%, exceeding Chinese flag ships for the first time in CCS classed international fleet; ship age continued to decline, becoming the youngest fleet among IACS member societies.

2014-10-01: CCS signed and issued the first ship plate electronic warranty certificate for Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corporation, which opened up the era of CCS electronic certificate.

2014-06-19: Li Keqiang Chinese Premier and Antonis Samaras Greek Prime Minister attended the signing ceremony of Greek government authorization agreement for CCS to carry out statutory survey and certification for Greek ships.

2014-05-11: Yang Chuantang Minister of Transport put forward new requirements on CCS development “internationalization, modernization, socialization and provision of good service”.

2014-04-24: CCS signed the first classification certificate with Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) (3) class notation for domestic sea-going ship “Hua Hai 601”.

2013-10-01: CCS obtained the qualification approval of BP’s condition assessment program (CAP).

2013-07-08: CCS Argentina Office was opened.

2013-05-16: under the witness of Li Keqiang Chinese Premier and Antonis Samaras Greek Prime Minister, CCS and Paragon Shipping signed a cooperation framework agreement together with two 4800TEU containership classification agreement in the Great Hall of the People.

2013-05-08: CCS FujJian Committee was inaugurated and the first annual meeting was held.

2012-09-04: CCS Jiangsu Branch was opened.

2012-08-31: CCS self-developed hull structure rules calculation and direct strength analysis software (CCS HCSR software) was released officially to the industry.

2012-08-07: CCS Zhejiang Branch was opened in Ning Bo.

2012-07-26: New CCS Tianjin Branch was opened.

2012-07-10: The world’s first Rules for Green Ships was officially published.

2012-03-14: CCS was awarded oustanding “Global Performer--Maritime” by Seatrade.

2011-12-21: Li Shenglin Minister of MOC inspected CCS Europe Center, pointing out “technology is core, service is fundamental and talent is key” to CCS development.

2011-07-06: CCS issued the world's first marine product asbestos-free certificate.

2011-05-12: CCS Houston Office was opened.

2011-04-10: CCS product certification was granted joint symbol of IAF-MLA/CNAS.

2011-02-21: As directed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Embassy in Greece launched the action of finding and leasing a ferry in Greece to go to Libya and evacuate the Chinese nationals. CCS quickly started the emergency plan, actively supported the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport, and deployed CCS overseas offices and manpower to start coordination and arrangements for the work of safely evacuating Chinese nationals.

2010-10-13: Seatrade (China) International Maritime Award 2010 was held in Dalian. CCS was awarded as the Best Classification Society.

2010-10-02: Premier of State Council Wen Jiabao attended the cooperation agreement signing ceremony between CCS and Cardiff Group.

2010-08-31: CCS classed fleet broke through 40 million gross tonnage.

2010-07-20: The first China Oil Transportation Safety Forum was held in CCS headquarters.

2010-02-05: Dubai Office surveyed the naval escort fleet “Qian Dao Hu”, and issued classification and statutory certificates.

2010-02-01: The Association of Asian Classification Society (ACS) was established in Indonesia. CCS was elected the first chairman of ACS.

2009-12-17: CCS Sao Paulo Office was opened.

2009-12-15: CCS Panama Office was opened.

2009-11-24: CCS London Maritime Center was formally established.

2009-08-31: CCS classed fleet broke through 30 million gross tonnage.

2009-07-10: CCS Knowledge Center was formally operated.

2009-07-02: CCS Academy was formally established.

2008-11-14: CCS was entitled as Year’s Excellent Corporate Cultural Development Enterprise in national transportation sector.

2008-09-09: Zhang Dejiang Vice Premier of State Council met with heads of Chinese ventures based in Hamburg including CCS.

2008-07-29: CCS issued the first doubly fed asynchronous wind power generator certificate.

2008-06-23: Australian government and Qatar government authorized CCS to carry out statutory survey respectively.

2008-02-14: CCS obtained CAP (Condition Assessment Programme) qualification approval from RightShip.

2007-10-29: CCS-DNV Technology Institute opened in Shanghai.

2007-09-06: CCS signed the authorization agreement with Qatar to carry out statutory survey.

2007-05-15: IACS EG/LAW legal experts group meeting was convened. It was the first time that IACS EG/LAW group meeting was held in Asia.

2007-04-20: The ship survey business of Fujian Maritime Safety Administration was transferred to CCS.

2007-01-22: CCS and DNV signed a joint venture agreement in Oslo, Norway on establishing a technology research institute and started to operate the first coating new standards institute in China.

2007-01-21: CCS established industrial product survey center, container survey center, R&D center and offshore engineering division, restructured and started to operate the unified plan approval across the country.

2006-11-18: The world’s first 54,500DWT bulk carrier which classed with CCS in compliance with CSR (JBP) rules started to build.

2006-07-01: On the IACS C53 meeting held in the US, CCS President Li Kejun formally took over the chairman of IACS.

2006-06-07: CCS Committee to China Seafarers Labor Union was established.

2006-05-18: CCS Shanghai Science and Technology Testing Centre was completed and put into use.

2006-03-18: The Magazine of China Ship Survey was formally launched
