Inspection of ship materials and equipment (marine products)

01/01.1970

Ships are made of a variety of materials and equipment and during a ship survey, these items are collectively called products. As ships sail on water for a long time, these products must meet the requirements of safety and reliability under challenging conditions, including situations with high salinity and high humidity in a dynamic, and long-term operational environment. Therefore, the role of the marine product inspection is to verify the conformity, applicability and reliability of materials and equipment through the technical evaluation in accordance with the technical regulations and specifications issued by the competent authority and classification societies. The inspection service is provided for product manufacturing companies, such as steel mills, equipment manufacturers, etc. Marine product inspections include individual/batch inspections, design approvals, type approvals, works approval, approval of inspections and testing institutes and principle approvals, etc. Following the inspections regime, the “Marine Product Certificate” (or “Equivalent Certificate”), the “Approval Certificate” and other documents are issued, respectively. China Classification Society (CCS) launched its product inspection services more than 60 years ago. It has mature inspection modes, working procedures, and operational methods, and has formed a relatively complete inspection system. CCS has an experienced inspection team who participate in more than 20 national-level scientific research projects every year. They implement effective control over each link that affects product quality like product design, manufacturing, testing and quality management, thereby ensuring that product quality meets the requirements of relevant conventions, laws and regulations, codes and standards, and providing a prerequisite for guaranteeing ship quality and the safety of life at sea. CCS performs approvals and inspections for product manufacturers worldwide in more than 70 countries and regions in Asia, Americas, Europe and beyond. CCS has approved more than 7,000 manufacturers and it issues more than 300,000 product certificates for its clients every year. The products inspected cover various industries such as metallurgy, machinery, electronics, oil, chemical engineering, and shipbuilding. Newbuilding IHM Service

01/01.1970

Upon request of shipowners or shipyards, China Classification Society (CCS) can issue the Declaration of Compliance of the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (which can be directly exchanged for a certificate after the convention comes into force) for newbuildings that have been verified and have an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) that meets the requirements of the Hong Kong Convention and IHM Guidelines. In the design and construction stage of a newbuilding, the IHM should be compiled in the following three steps, “collecting the information of hazardous materials”, “using the information of hazardous materials” and “compiling a list of standard formats". Shipowners or shipyards can also apply for the “Green Passport for Recycling” (GPR) notation in Section 5 of “Survey of Environmental Protection Notations” in Chapter 6 of Part 1 of the CCS Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships. Ships that have been granted the GPR notation will be recognized by the market. As long as an IHM that complies with the regulations has been compiled for the ship and the relevant requirements of the CCS Guidelines for the Compilation and Verification of the Inventory of Hazardous Materials for Ships are met in all stages from the signing of the shipbuilding contract, design, product ordering, construction through to operations, CCS will grant the ship a GPR notation. For more details, please contact us:Tel: 0086-10-58113391 E-mail: md@ccs.org.cn

Optimizing fleet operations

01/01.1970

Excellent green shipping solutions OTA (Optimal Trim Assistant) is a software system independently developed by CCS that can be installed on any computer to optimize the vertical inclination of the ship's navigation and can perfectly assist the green operation of shipping. Simply input fuel information, stem and stern draft, speed and other parameters, and with a single click, you can perform adaptive optimal longitudinal tilt search and export a complete optimization report, including the following contents: voyage information, fuel information, sailing conditions, recommended optimal trim (stem and stern draft) and corresponding energy saving potential estimation, ballast water estimation and adjustment plan, etc.  More than just software In order to facilitate the adjustment of the ship's actual trim, OTA provides a tool for the conversion of the ship's dipstick position for a more accurate and optimal trim operation. In most cases, a proper reduction of ballast water will reduce fuel consumption; however, in some conditions, a proper increase of ballast water will reduce the hull resistance and benefit the ship's navigation. The ballast water calculation module of OTA will give reasonable ballast water stowage suggestions through optimization calculations. On the basis of realizing the most efficient trim, further optimization is carried out to achieve refined operational management, and a guiding ballast water adjustment scheme is issued in combination with the trim optimization results. OTA also provides a data interface for interaction with the existing vessel management system of shipping companies, which facilitates the integrated information management of shipping enterprises. A complete optimization calculation report will be generated once the trim optimization calculation is done.

Verification by Real Ship Sea Trial

01/01.1970

CCS has performed the real ship sea trial for the optimal trim application together with China Shipping Group, whose 4250TEU ship in service was selected as the test ship. Its major parameters are as follows: During sea trial, this ship is bound for Tianjin Port from Nansha Port, Guangzhou, with the departure draft of 8.7m. The test is performed in the Yellow Sea area at north latitude 34°. To ensure the accuracy of test results, this trial is implemented subject to the international ship and maritime technical standard ISO15016:2002(E). The ship speed, main engine revolution, main engine shaft torque, main engine shaft power and other parameters are respectively measured under three different trim conditions, namely, trim by bow, flat floating and trim by stem. To eliminate the influences from wind wave, the ship takes an S-shaped fore-and-aft movement, and the error of readings is reduced by making average reading. According to the sea trial results, when the ballast water is increased by 1800t and the trim condition is changed to trim by bow of 0.8m, the required main engine power is reduced by 910KW with the speed unchanged, and the total fuel consumption is reduced by 14t with a reduction of fuel cost by 70,000RMB, which is equal to an average reduction by nearly 20,000RMB per day. The energy saving rate is 9.2%. Based on comprehensive consideration of the ship trim adjustment scope and the all year round operation mode, the adoption of the optimal trim has helped the ship to achieve 5-8% energy-saving potential for its operation during the whole year, with average fuel consumption being reduced by 3.2 ton/day and CO2 emission reduced by 9.96 ton/day. Taken effective operation of the year as 200 days, 640 tons of fuel can be saved effectively for the whole year, and fuel cost per ship/year can be reduced by 3.2m RMB on assumption that fuel costs 5000 RMB per ton. Serial ships and sister ships can achieve scale benefits. Long time use of OTA can effectively change the operation habit of crew, make advance planning to realize optimal trim, lower demand for main engine power, save fuel, reduce carbon emission and achieve long-term benefits.

Main features

01/01.1970

OTA is an adaptive trim optimization based on its bottom layer covering 99.5% draft condition and speed database. The database contains information such as ship speed, draft, trim, resistance and main engine power, and the corresponding data are generated by combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a ship model tank test. The OTA system can find the relationship of the ship trim-draft-speed-power under any working conditions; and can find the main engine power, trim and draft (speed) form a spatially continuous curved surface, and the optimal trim point at any speed (draft) under any water through the corresponding optimization algorithm. OTA has the following advantages over other operational tools and means:● Significant energy savings and economic benefits;● It does not affect the ship operations and does not reduce its cargo capacity;● It requires no adjustments to the hull structure and equipment and no reduction in speed;● Can be installed and run on any computer;● No hardware investments or modifications are required (additional sensor, inductance gage, etc.); ● The software interface is user-friendly and supports easy, one-button operation.
