China Classification Society Supports Ship-to-Ship Methanol Bunkering System Launch in Zhoushan

release time:2026-07-15 15:07

On June 27th, 2026, the methanol bunkering tanker “JIA CHEN 17” completed the first ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering operation at Tsuneishi Group (Zhoushan) Shipbuilding, supplying 795 tons of methanol to the methanol dual-fuel container ship “MAERSK FLINDERS” within 5.5 hours. All the inspections and tests including hose connection, gas detection, emergency shutdown systems, fire-fighting and personal protection arrangement were confirmed to comply with safety operation requirements before bunkering.

It was the first STS methanol bunkering operation for a new-building vessel at a shipyard in Zhejiang Province, and Zhoushan became the second port in China with the capability for routine STS methanol bunkering operation besides Shanghai. Globally, only 15 ports were capable of offering methanol bunkering service. The breakthrough of the STS methanol bunkering operation expanded the green marine fuel supply services and upgraded the function of the staple commodity resource distribution hub for Zhoushan.

For the smooth delivery of “JIA CHEN 17”, China Classification Society (CCS) performed the on-site survey throughout the entire construction process, especially to ensure that the methanol bunkering system complied with the Interim Regulation for Technical Requirements and Surveys of Methanol Bunkering Vessels (2025) released by China MSA and CCS’s Guidelines for Methanol Bunkering Vessels (2023).

With the decarbonization of the global maritime industry and the target of a world-class port and international maritime service base for Zhoushan, CCS will contribute advanced standards and professional survey services, and enhance technical research on alternative marine fuels including methanol, LNG, ammonia and hydrogen consistently.
