The Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships is the basic rules of CCS to provide classification services for sea-going ships engaged on international voyages, including classification conditions and scope and supporting technical requirements. The Rules specifies technical and construction standards, survey and test requirements for ship construction, hull structure, machinery and electrical equipment and systems, fire safety, environmental protection etc., as well as conditions to maintain them in good conditions, which are intended to control the safety and quality of ships to an appropriate level and receive wide recognition by the industry.

 The Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships applies to classed sea-going ships of 20 m in length and over. Unless otherwise specified, it does not apply to military ships, wooden ships, non-commercial yachts, high-speed craft, small waterplane area craft, sailboat.

 The Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships (2023) incorporates 2023 amendments to the Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships, 2022 RCN No.3, and 2023 RCN No.1 related thereto, on the basis of the Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships (2022).

 Upon effective, the Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships (2023) supersedes the Rules for Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships (2022).
