Feasibility Study

The Pinglu Canal sets higher requirements for vessel design, seaworthiness and technical standards.

The classification of the Qinzhou Bay navigation area is a key prerequisite for direct river-sea navigation via the Pinglu Canal. China Classification Society (CCS) participated in the canal feasibility study, and independently conducted the navigation feasibility assessment of Xijiang main line vessel types. CCS provided solid technical support for the safe and efficient navigation of the Pinglu Canal. Finally, Qinzhou Bay was approved as China’s first “equivalent to Class A” navigation zone.

Resolving Technical Challenges

“Beigang Canal 001” is the demonstration vessel. It has a length overall of 89.9 m and a moulded depth of 6.1 m. It can carry containers or dry bulk cargo and meets the requirements for the i-Ship (N, E) and Green Ship-3 class notations of CCS.

During the shipbuilding process, CCS Wuhan Rules and Research Institute reviewed the ship drawings. CCS provided professional guidance, and worked out the solutions to the layout of LNG storage tanks, the tonnage calculation of open container ships, and the issue of overall longitudinal strength, etc. The full-process technical support by CCS had laid a solid foundation for the vessel’s successful completion.
