On 16 (Wed.) Feb. 2022; CCS experts Mr.Gan Shaowei , Deputy General Manager of Technology & Information, and Mr. Wei Maosu, Chief Engineer from Science &Technology Innovation and Test Center are invited to made an one-hour presentation with INTERCARGO members on the Webinar of “ Decarbonization ambition and practice in China by CCS” hold by INTERCARGO.
IMO is now developing lifecycle GHG and carbon intensity guidelines and for maritime fuels and focusing on the consideration of mid-term and long-term GHG reduction measures, which will have a significant impact on future ship operations and new shipbuilding markets. Shipping decarbonization is not only bringing far-reaching influence for shipping itself but also reshaping the related industry such as energy supply, shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. While recognizing the grand challenges for getting to zero-carbon shipping, the industries also see different opportunities.
Under this background , the two CCS experts are invited to share with INTERCARGO members the current implementation practice of the new ship carbon intensity regulations in combination with actual cases and analysis of the performance of the global fleet.
The topic of Mr.Gan Shaowei speech’s is ‘China Industry Perspective on Shipping Decarbonization. The presentation focused on Shipping decarbonization ambition and practice in China, influence and challenges brought by decarbonization and China
industry’s perspective
Mr.Gan Shaowei states that The ultimate goal for shipping decarbonization in China is as same as that in EU and in IMO, that is ,to achieve the net zero emission. While the goal is clear, the pathway to achieve the goal is still controversial and full of uncertainties both in China and for international shipping. Energy transition is fundamental to shipping decarbonization but economic feasibility, fuel availability and sustainability are the most challenging barriers. In short term, LNG and dual fuel solution is more attractive. Among other fuels, methanol seems has greater advantage in the long term. MBMs may spur the uptake of alternative fuels, but the effect remains to be seen.
Mr.Wei Maosu made his presentation on the topic "EEXI / CII: the new challenges faced by shipowners today and in the future". It covers the analysis of EEXI status of major ship types among tankers, continers and bulks, especialy the bulk carriers, as well as the measures to improve EEXI and CII , with the the specific EEXI and CII case on a bulk carrier shared , and the EEXI and CII technical service provided by CCS.
