In order to foster the spirit of navigation in the new era, showcase the achievement of China in transportation construction, and step up efforts to advance cultural progress, the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China decided in 2020 to compile the second volume on the basis of the Ships of China edited and published by China Institute of Navigation in 1988. Meanwhile, the Ministry arranged the filming of a feature-length documentary Ships of China in such a way to present the development achievements and reminisce about the millennium development journey through pictures and images.
The Ships of China - Volume II covers 1363 important ships owned by Chinese organizations and shipowners during the period from 1986 to 2020. This book focuses on such representative "story ships", advanced ships and first ships that are characterized by different hull forms, different waters and different stages. The overview of hull forms in each chapter, together with exquisite ship photos and brief ship parameters, provides readers with the development, evolution and technical characteristics of ships in that period, demonstrates the clear-cut development and progress of China's shipbuilding industry, and showcases the style of a powerful shipbuilding country. This book is in both Chinese and English, convenient for international communication, and has an index for searching by ship names. This book is not only a ship "atlas" but also a ship-related "concise dictionary". It demonstrates the glorious course and great creation of ship development since China's reform and opening up, especially since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, reflects the magnificent picture of the development and growth of China's transportation industry led by the Party, and is a popular science book with professional research value and popular science knowledge propaganda property.
The ten-episode documentary Ships of China is the first feature-length documentary focusing on Chinese ships, and comprehensively and systematically describes the evolution of Chinese ships, shipping development, shipbuilding & application techniques, and ship culture over the past thousands of years. It is a comprehensive integration of historical information, professionalism, knowledge, interest and storytelling. The theme is described on the basis of three main lines, i.e. science & technology development, economy development and humanities development, especially focusing on the humanities. Its overall structure is a combination of timeline and ship types. The theme song "Chinese Ships - The Most Charming Vessels" composed for this documentary is beautiful and poetic in its lyrics. As an embodiment of the efforts made to build a transportation power, maritime power and shipping power, the Ships of China reveals the unique charm and contemporary value of transportation culture, plays an important carrier role in disseminating marine culture and promoting maritime science popularization, and improves the Chinese people's maritime consciousness and maritime domain awareness, which has important practical significance.
