Among the available green fuels, methanol and green ammonia are considered the two main stream alternative fuels for achieving net zero emissions in international shipping by virtue of their good supply and economic expectations.
This paper discusses the design basis, ship arrangement, safety protection, and other core elements of the application of ammonia fuel in ships by taking the practical application of ammonia fuel power system on ships as an example, in order to provide technical support and practical guidance for the promotion and application of ammonia-fuelled vessels in the shipping industry.
China Classification Society (CCS) has been carrying out comprehensive research on the application of ammonia fuel in ships since 2021, and its research scope covers key links in the entire industry chain, including ammonia fuel preparation, transportation, water application, etc. CCS has made significant achievements, and preliminarily established relevant service capabilities and products.
At present, with the continuous deepening of global energy transformation, the shipping industry is ushering in a new era characterized by green, low-carbon, and sustainable development.
With the significant advancement of zero carbon emissions target in the shipping industry, alternative fuels play a crucial role as the main force in reducing emissions, especially zero-carbon fuels.
