China Classification Society (CCS) has recently issued China’s first offshore facility product inspection certificate for an offshore energy storage system.

China Classification Society (CCS) has recently issued China’s first offshore facility product inspection certificate for an offshore energy storage system. The system is intended for installation on the Lufeng 14-4DPP platform, where it will provide energy storage support for the “CNOOC Anlan” – the world’s first 16?MW tension?leg floating wind power platform.

Project Significance and Inspection Approach
This project marks the first application of a large?scale energy storage system on an offshore oil and gas production platform. Recognising its significance, CCS placed high priority on the work. In line with CCS’s applicable rules and relevant national standards, CCS convened in?depth discussions among key technical staff to thoroughly review inspection requirements covering equipment certification, structural fire protection, fire safety, battery safety, and electrical performance, and developed a detailed inspection plan.

To ensure the quality of the product inspection, CCS agreed with the client to certify the system in accordance with the requirements for Class A equipment as specified in the Safety Rules for Fixed Offshore Platforms (2000). A comprehensive inspection schedule was established, with each milestone being verified against the relevant standards to confirm that product quality met all specified requirements.

Knowledge Building and Future Impact
While fulfilling the inspection tasks, CCS also conducted a systematic review and consolidation of inspection techniques for offshore energy storage facilities and similar equipment. This effort has resulted in replicable and scalable inspection practices that will serve as a valuable technical reference for future projects of this nature.
