CCS-led ISO international standard for methanol bunkering has been officially published!

ISO 22120:2026 provides a unified international technical framework for methanol bunkering of ships — a major milestone for green shipping.

WHAT DOES IT COVER?

Titled "Ships and marine technology — Specification for bunkering of methanol fuelled vessels", the standard addresses the full methanol bunkering chain:

→ Transfer systems
→ Risk assessment
→ Operational procedures
→ Safety protection
→ Personnel training

It also covers bunkering facility-vessel compatibility, bunker hoses, ESD systems, safety zones, PPE, emergency response, and records and documentation.

HOW WAS IT DEVELOPED?

Work kicked off in August 2023 and progressed through the full ISO cycle: WD → CD → DIS → FDIS.

CCS experts reviewed and addressed 500+ comments from global stakeholders across shipping, ports, fuel supply, and equipment manufacturing.

The standard was developed under ISO/TC 8/SC 25 (Maritime GHG Reduction), with a technical expert from CCS Wuhan Rules and Research Institute serving as Project Leader.

Methanol-fuelled fleets are growing fast. ISO 22120:2026 provides a unified technical framework for safe, consistent, and efficient methanol bunkering worldwide.
