The First in China! China Classification Society (CCS) Completed Approval in Principle(AIP) of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Power Generation System for Ships

Recently, CCS issued an AIP certificate of marine Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) power generation system to the No.712 Research Institute of CSSC (referred to as the “No.712 Institute”). leaders from CCS Wuhan Branch,   No.712 Institute, and relevant technicians from both parties attended the ceremony. This is the first AIP of marine SOFC power generation system in China. It is a milestone for SOFC to application in maritime transportation, marking a crucial step in the application of SOFC series products and playing a leading role in industry demonstration.

The marine SOFC power generation system is an highly efficient power source (approximately 60% with itself, and can reach over 80% when combined with gas turbines) with other good characteristics such as environmentally friendly, easy modular assembly, wide range of fuel selection (such as natural gas, coal gas, biomass gas, methanol, etc.). In addition, it does not require precious metal catalysts, and has strong adaptability. As a fuel cell system with high application prospects, it has been widely concerned by parties in maritime industries. Some foreign researches have entered the stage of commercial demonstration and application at the level from hundreds of kilowatts to megawatts.

CCS and the No.712 Institute will further focus on the optimize and adaptation of the SOFC power generation system application onboard, and provide technical support for the demonstration and commercial operation of the system, so as to facilitate China’s shipping industry to achieve the dual carbon target.
