The representative
230,000 DWT Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs) classed by China Classification
Society (CCS) fall into three categories: the world’s first converted VLOC, the
first domestically independently developed newbuilding, and serialized
mainstream vessels. These ships serve as an important practical platform for
CCS ore carrier rules and technologies to evolve from exploration to maturity,
and have filled many gaps in the design, construction and conversion of large
ore carriers in China.
1. Global Pioneer Conversion Benchmark: “HEBEI INNOVATOR
As the world’s first 230,000 DWT ore carrier converted
from a single-hull VLCC, this vessel marks a milestone in shipping history for
ship conversion. Completed and put into operation in 2005, the whole conversion
process was supported by CCS through full-cycle technical services including
conversion survey and class transfer certification.
In 2003, the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
introduced regulations on the phase-out of single-hull oil tankers. Hebei Ocean
Shipping contracted the conversion of the 250,000 DWT single-hull VLCC “GALAXY”
(built in Japan in 1986) into an ore carrier at Shanhaiguan Shipyard. CCS set
up a dedicated project team to tackle unprecedented technical challenges in the
conversion.
CCS led the overall conversion including structural
design, strength verification and process control. More than 1,000 tons of
steel plates were added to reconstruct the hull structure, turning the single-hull
oil tanker into a double-hull ore carrier. Tailored loading and survey schemes
were formulated, realizing the world’s first cross-ship-type conversion from
VLCC to VLOC.
The vessel operated safely for 6 years over 24 voyages,
transporting 5.6 million tons of ore, and set a global benchmark for the reuse
of single-hull oil tankers. It also drove CCS to develop the Rules for the Classification and
Construction of Special Ore Carriers, laying CCS’s
technical foundation in large ore carriers. The ship model is still displayed
at CCS Qinhuangdao Branch as an iconic industry exhibit.
2. First Domestically Developed Newbuilding: “CSB
FORTUNE”
“CSB FORTUNE” is
the first 230,000 DWT newbuilt ore carrier independently developed in China
with full intellectual property rights. Delivered by CSSC Guangzhou Longxue
Shipbuilding in February 2010 and classed with CCS, it was awarded “Global
Classic Ship Type of 2010”.
As a key model for CCS’s
newbuilding survey of 230,000 DWT ore carriers in the early stage, CCS
participated in the whole process including plan approval and construction
survey. Based on the Rules for the
Classification of Sea-going Steel Ships, CCS formulated special requirements
for structural strength and loading safety, verifying CCS’s
technical service capability in newbuilding area.
It became a main vessel for China Shipping Group’s
iron ore transportation between China and Australia, also serving the Brazil–China route. It filled the gap in the independent design
and construction of large ore carriers in China, and boosted the localized and
large-scale development of 230,000 DWT ore carriers.
3. Serialized Mainstream Operating Vessels: 230,000 DWT
VLOC Series by SDARI
In 2006, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research
Institute (SDARI) designed a series of twelve 230,000 DWT ore carriers for the
former China Shipping Development Co., Ltd. Eight of them were built and
surveyed in Nansha, Guangzhou, and all were classed with CCS. These ships form
the core transport capacity on the China–Australia iron ore route, and represent the large-scale
application of CCS’s rules system for 230,000 DWT ore carriers.
Based on general rules and combined with the heavyduty
and corrosion-prone characteristics of ore carriers, CCS supplemented special
technical requirements and provided fullcycle services including design
verification, construction survey and operational technical support, helping
this ship type become the mainstream benchmark for 230,000 DWT ore carriers in
China.
This series has become the main force in China–Australia iron ore transportation, with each vessel
delivering efficient ocean shipping. It has driven the large-scale and
professional development of China’s
iron ore maritime fleet, and provided massive ship data for CCS to develop
rules for larger ore carriers including 250,000 DWT, 325,000 DWT and 400,000
DWT.
The 230,000 DWT ore carrier marks the core starting point
for CCS to shift from “learning from experience” to “independent
R&D” in the ore carrier sector. From the conversion
breakthrough of “HEBEI INNOVATOR” to the newbuilding survey of “CSB
FORTUNE”, CCS has gradually mastered core technologies in ore
carrier structural design, strength verification and cargo management.
Survey and operation experience of this tonnage has laid
early practical foundations for CCS to formulate specialized guidelines and
rules for ore carriers, upgrading CCS’s technical standards from “general
adaptation” to “specialized customization”.
Through full-cycle services for conversion and
newbuilding of 230,000 DWT ore carriers, CCS has established a fulllifecycle
technical service system for ore carriers. It has laid technical and service
foundations for undertaking orders of ultralarge ore carriers such as 250,000
DWT, 325,000 DWT and 400,000 DWT, and has finally ranked first globally in
terms of classed tonnage of ore carriers.
The above three categories cover scenarios of conversion,
newbuilding and serialized operation of 230,000 DWT ore carriers, all with core
technical services provided by CCS throughout the process. They mark CCS's ore
carrier rules evolving from exploration to maturity, and provide critical
support for capacity security on iron ore maritime transport corridors.
