Recently, China Classification Society (CCS) issued the first Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for ship type design of methanol dual fueled VLCC developed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd (DSIC) and COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation Co., Ltd (CSET). In the presence of all related parties, Zhang Hui, General Manager of CCS Dalian Branch, issued the AiP certificate. This ship type is a low/zero carbon alternative fuel ship jointly developed by DSIC, CSET and CCS in response to the low carbon development. The concept design is based on the latest 310,000 DWT VLCC designed and built by DSIC, equipped with two methanol fuel tanks totaling 11,000 m3 to meet the fuel demand of the main and auxiliary engines and boilers during the range of 2,3000 nautical miles. CCS, in collaboration with the designers, has carried out design evaluation of the general arrangement of the ship, the selection and arrangement of fuel tank type and fuel system, and provided comprehensive technical support in terms of compliance verification and design optimization.
At present, against the background of the increasing concern about the carbon emission intensity of marine fuel in the whole life cycle, methanol fuel with relatively high maturity in terms of application technology on board, especially “green methanol” with great potential for carbon reduction, is more and more favored by the shipping industry. The design and approval of this ship type provides a novel and practical solution for the selection of alternative fuel ship type for large tankers.
