Guidelines for Inspection of Alternative Fuel Conversion for Ships

release time:2025-12-01 11:12

To address international greenhouse gas emission reduction requirements and respond to China's "dual carbon strategy", China Classification Society (CCS) has developed and launched technical service products for ship alternative fuel conversion. In response to the needs of service product development, the Guidelines for Inspection of Ship Alternative Fuel Conversion for Ships has been compiled. It provides drawing review and inspection support for the conversion of main propulsion plants, generator sets, boilers and other equipment of existing ships to use methanol/ethanol fuels, LNG fuel and ammonia fuel, and also offers guidance for the conversion design and process of existing ships.

This guideline consists of 3 chapters. Chapter 1 mainly covers the scope of application, applicable codes and guidelines, non-destructive testing and welding requirements, conversion process, alternative design review, risk assessment, general principles for engine conversion, and product certification requirements. Chapter 2 focuses on the list of drawings to be submitted and key review points for ships converting to methanol/ethanol fuels, LNG fuel and ammonia fuel. Chapter 3 specifies the inspection and certification requirements for such conversions, mainly involving fuel tanks, dual-fuel main engines, prime movers of dual-fuel generators, dual-fuel boilers, fuel supply systems, fuel bunkering systems, and auxiliary systems.

The Guidelines for Inspection of Ship Alternative Fuel Conversion for Ships (2025) will take effect on December 1, 2025.
