CCS on the International Stage
The solid domestic business development promoted CCS to stride on its international road. With approval from the State Council, CCS began to establish overseas offices in 1985 to perfect its overseas service network and step on the international stage.
On January 1, 1986, under the Statute of the China Classification Society (CCS) approved by the Ministry of Communications (MOC), CCS, previously under the Register of Shipping of PRC (ZC) but using a separate emblem, was given approval to share the ZC emblem, establish its board of directors and update its class notation, load line mark and certificate forms.
In 1988, after indomitable efforts, CCS succeeded in joining the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) as a full member. From then on CCS devoted its energies to establishing agreements on international technical cooperation and authorization of statutory surveys for ships, performing classification and statutory surveys on ships flying both Chinese and foreign flags, and speeding up the construction of its international service network.

From 1991 to 1993, CCS established its quality management system according to IACS QSCS and ISO 9001 standards and obtained the IACS-issued Quality System Certificate of Conformity. During this period, the company's English acronym changed from the original ZC to CCS. Its highest class notation was included in the Classification Clauses of the Institute of London Underwriters (ILU), which gave CCS classed ships the same preferential insurance treatment as those classed by other well known classification societies worldwide.
From 1996 to 1997, for the first time in its history, CCS took the chairmanship of IACS, successfully leading and strengthening the association and playing an important role in solving bulk carrier safety issues of international concern, demonstrating to the world maritime community the ability of the Chinese classification society. The move gained CCS and the Chinese maritime industry good recognition from the international maritime industry.
