GUIDELINES FOR AUTONOMOUS CARGO SHIPS 2018

China Classification Society has carried out technical research on autonomous cargo ships and developed the Guidelines for Autonomous Cargo Ships, 2018, for the purpose of providing technical basis for the design and construction of autonomous cargo ships.

Taking the principle of achieving an overall safety and environmental protection level at least the same as that provided in SOLAS, MARPOL, COLREG72 and STCW, on the basis of risk analysis method and with the objective of covering technical requirements for achieving remote operation without seafarers on board and fully autonomous operation of ship, the Guidelines specify goal, functional requirements, prescriptive requirements as well as survey and test requirements for systems of autonomous cargo ships by adopting the goal-based standards (GBS) method, including situation awareness, navigation control, machinery installations, mooring and anchoring, electrical installations, communication and signal equipment, hull construction and safety, fire-fighting, environmental protection, ship security, remote operation center, cyber security, etc.

The Guidelines will enter into force from 1 October 2018.
